Kubernetes

Kubernetes (often abbreviated as K8s) is a container orchestration system originally developed by Google and now maintained by the Cloud Native Computing Foundation (CNCF). It automates deployment, scaling, and management of containerized applications across server clusters, providing resilient and scalable infrastructure for modern production environments.

This manifest deploys three replicas of an Nginx server with controlled resource allocation and exposes the service via a load balancer. Kubernetes automatically maintains the specified replica count and redistributes traffic in case of failures.

Kubernetes Implementation

  1. Choose a distribution (vanilla Kubernetes, OpenShift, Rancher, EKS/AKS/GKE for cloud)
  2. Provision a cluster with at least one master node and multiple worker nodes
  3. Configure kubectl and establish cluster connection via kubeconfig
  4. Deploy base resources (namespaces, RBAC, network policies, storage classes)
  5. Implement monitoring solutions (Prometheus, Grafana) and centralized logging
  6. Set up CI/CD deployment strategy integrating Kubernetes (GitOps with ArgoCD/Flux)
  7. Configure auto-scaling (HPA for pods, Cluster Autoscaler for nodes)
  8. Establish security policies (Pod Security Standards, OPA/Gatekeeper)

Start with managed clusters (EKS, AKS, GKE) to avoid initial operational complexity. Use abstraction tools like Helm to manage complex deployments and Kustomize for multi-environment management. Implement resource quotas and limit ranges from day one to prevent resource overconsumption.
